New build construction at highest level since 2007

The number of new-build homes that were under construction in 2016 rose by 5% to the highest level since 2007.

Figures released by the Department for Communities and Local Government revealed that 153,370 new homes were started in the year to December, up 5% from the same period in 2015.

Government figures showed that 140,660 homes were completed in the year to December 2016, 1% fewer than in the previous year.

Gavin Barwell, minister for housing and planning, said: “We’ve got the country building again with the highest number of housing starts for nine years.

“However, we know there’s more to be done to build more homes in the places that people want to live.”

The government recently released a white paper detailing reforms to boost housebuilding in the UK.

Mr Barwell added: “Our housing white paper sets out an ambitious set of proposals to deliver more land, speed up build out, diversify the housing market and support people who need help now.”
