New UK-China proptech centre opens at University of Huddersfield

A new bilateral construction technology centre has been launched at the University of Huddersfield.

UK and Chinese experts in advanced digital construction technology have agreed to form the new Sino-UK Centre of Excellence for Digital Construction.

Construction professionals and academic specialists in both countries will meet and share research in fields such as building information modelling, virtual and mixed reality, and data sensing.

The launch of the centre is part of a memorandum of understanding signed 12 months ago between the University of Huddersfield and Tsinghua University in Beijing.

The two universities recently held a three-day UK-China digital construction workshop in Huddersfield, which featured delegates from six UK universities and three construction firms and consultancies, as well as participants from four Chinese universities and institutes and some of China’s largest building firms.

The workshop included discussion sessions and keynote addresses, plus a talk on the development of building information modelling development in China from Professor Zhiliang Ma of Tsinghua University.

Song Wu, professor in surveying and IT at Huddersfield, said that the decision to launch the centre was a key outcome from the workshop.

“Both sides were very keen to collaborate,” he added.

The next meeting of the centre will be held in China in 2018, hosted by the Beijing Urban Construction Group
