Planning permission has been granted to rebuild part of one of the UK’s most famous football stadiums.

The Irish Football Association (IFA) confirmed that it has received approval for the complete rebuilding of the West Stand at Northern Ireland’s national stadium, Windsor Park.

The refurbishment of the West Stand was included in initial plans for the stadium’s redevelopment, but work in March revealed structural problems which meant it had to be demolished and rebuilt.

Patrick Nelson, Chief Executive of the IFA, said he was delighted that rebuilding work could begin on the stand.

“The newly reconstructed stand will be in line with the new South and East Stands and will be even better than what was there before,” said Patrick.

“With improved sightlines, more comfort for fans and one viewing platform, the new stand will only add to the noise and the legendary atmosphere at that end of the ground.”

The West Stand will have a capacity for 3,400 fans and will be open by 8th October 2016 in time for the country’s World Cup qualifier with San Marino.

“As we have seen in recent weeks, the new National Football Stadium is already a fantastic sporting arena,” added Patrick.

“When complete, it will be the envy of many other associations around the world and will be a modern, state-of-the-art home for football in Northern Ireland.”

The redevelopment is being funded by Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and the Northern Ireland Executive.

The costs for rebuilding the stand will be met by insurance, meaning there will be no significant impact on the project’s budget.
