Rugby club exchanges contracts with developer for £22m hotel project

Rugby union club Leicester Tigers has exchanged contracts with Marshall Commercial Development Projects Ltd for the former’s proposed hotel and car park scheme.

The exchange between the duo now means that work can commence on the £22m project in the summer of 2019, subject to planning approval.

Marshall CDP has commercial expertise in building distribution warehouses, retail parks, offices, residential property and retail as well as hotels and leisure.

The construction firm will be responsible for building the proposed five-floor, 183-room hotel on the surrounding 1.7-acre Granby Halls car park site.

Marshall CDP will work with Pick Everard, which completed the original designs for the project and will oversee the construction.

“Since announcing the news to build a hotel and car park here at Welford Road, we’ve been holding talks with a variety of property developers to ensure the right fit for the project,” said Simon Cohen, chief executive at Leicester Tigers.

“Tigers are committed to funding the first team to the highest possible level, so we have decided to work with a development partner for the hotel project – much as we would have liked to have the millions to build it ourselves.”

Simon Marshall, managing director at Marshall Holdings Ltd, added: “The exchanging of contracts now means that we can look to progress the next steps in the project build, with a view to the council completing the appropriate planning application and breaking ground on site in the summer of 2019.”
