Simon Knowles joins Shawbrook as director of development finance

Shawbrook has appointed Simon Knowles (pictured above) as its new director of development finance.

He joins from Aldermore — where he was head of property development — and has over 20 years of sector experience.

Simon will lead Shawbrook’s established team — which has grown by 50% in the past 12 months — and accelerate its expansion in the Midlands, Yorkshire, Scotland and the North East.

“I’ve been in the industry for a long time and was surprised how quickly and quietly Shawbrook has set about delivering a very compelling development finance proposition and distribution capability,” said Simon.

Shawbrook offers funding of up to £30m on various scheme types, including residential, mixed-use, student accommodation, retirement living and build-to-rent.

“We know that developers of a certain size still struggle to get the right amount of leverage and flexibility from lenders, particularly in specialist markets, such as retirement living, student accommodation or build-to-rent, and this is where Shawbrook has stepped in and stepped up,” he added.

“It’s why I joined and I’m excited to see what developments Shawbrook can help make a reality across the country.”

Terry Woodley, managing director of development finance at Shawbrook, stated that the bank placed “real emphasis” on regional coverage, having put relationship directors in local markets across the country, largely in response to demand from housebuilders for closer professional working relationships.

“We find that the relationship director and client use one another as a sounding board for ideas and insights into the local market,” said Terry.

“So, building a team of high-calibre, experienced individuals is our priority, and I’m delighted that Simon has joined us to support many more developers across the country with the funding and service we can offer.”
