Labour attacks government over housing plans

The Labour party has accused the government of not doing enough to address the housing shortage .

The Labour party has accused the government of not doing enough to address the housing shortage.
Yesterday, the government announced plans to deliver one million homes by 2020 and offer 1.3 million tenants the chance to buy their homes using the Right to Buy Initiative.
Local councils will also have to plans for new homes in place by 2017 or the government will do it for them.
However the opposition Labour party says the plans are not adequate.
John Healey, Shadow Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Every area should have a local plan in place.
“It’s been part of the five years of failure on housing under this government that a large number of areas still don’t have plans to meet housing demand and to stop developers having a free hand.
“For years the government has been promising action, but hasn’t delivered. This failure across the board has meant five years of higher rents, more homelessness, home-ownership falling every year, and the lowest rate of house-building since the 1920s.”
