Theresa May replaces housing minister

Prime Minister Theresa May has appointed a new Minister of State for Housing and Planning.

Gavin Barwell MP has been appointed after being elected Conservative MP for Croydon Central in 2010, and having served as personal private secretary to the Minister of State for Decentralisation and Planning Policy from 2011-12.

On 17th July Gavin Barwell tweeted: “Hugely honoured to have been asked by the Prime Minister to serve as Minister of State for Housing & Planning and Minister for London.

“[I] look forward to working with councils, housing associations, developers [and] investors to ensure we build the homes people need and deserve... and to working with [the Mayor of London] to ensure the continued success of our wonderful, diverse capital – and that all Londoners share in it.”

Mr Barwell’s responsibilities now include neighbourhood planning, serving as lead minister on the Housing Bill and planning policy.

The position was formerly held by Brandon Lewis MP, who has been appointed as Minister of State for Policing and the Fire Service.

Mr Barwell’s appointment follows an announcement from Mrs May stressing the importance of tackling the housing deficit.

Theresa May has also announced the creation of the Department of International Trade which has been supported by the major five banks.

On 25th July the property development industry called on Theresa May to ease planning restrictions.
