The secretary of state for housing, communities and local government had to confirm that he was content with the plan as the site is on green belt land.

Proposals for the ground at Sawston were approved by South Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning committee in November, but it has now received confirmation that there are no objections from Mr Javid.

The plans for the stadium will see the former landfill site off Babraham Road transformed into a new 3,000-capacity stadium, with a neighbouring artificial grass pitch and spectator area.

The stadium will also provide facilities for local teams, people and families in the area.

Cllr Pippa Corney, chair of South Cambridgeshire District Council’s planning committee, said it was incredibly positive news that the secretary of state had confirmed that he had no objections.

“There is a very high bar set for construction within the green belt, so it is quite right that there is this extra check in place.

“We felt last year, as we still do, that the special circumstances required to permit this development to take place are very much evident.

“The sports facilities that will be available to the local community will be so important and well-used that they represent these necessary special circumstances."

The football club reminded fans that once the council issues the planning permission, there would be a period of six weeks where objectors could still lodge a judicial review against the process.

“…We need to be aware of the next few weeks in case there are any objections to the process,” said Kevin Satchell, chairman of Cambridge City Football Club.

“If not, then we will be looking to finalise matters and move forward with the project and start making some real progress.

“I am sure that news will please our supporters and members of the local community who have been fantastic in their support of the proposed facility.”
