Famous London mansion put up for sale

A famous grand mansion townhouse, whose former owner inspired a character in ‘Pygmalion’ and ‘My Fair Lady’ has been put up for sale.

The eight-bedroom Upper Wimpole Street property comes complete with an internally attached two-bedroom house on Dunstable Mews, and has been listed by Rokstone at £14.95m.

A former occupant, Professor Horace Hayman Wilson, provided the inspiration for the character of Professor Henry Higgins in George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 play Pygmalion.

Becky Fatemi, Managing Director of Rokstone, said: “This magnificent Marylebone townhouse and mews has an interesting history, and provides outstanding accommodation.

“The property is perfect for a large extended family wanting a sizeable London home with space to entertain.

“In this part of Marylebone it is very rare for a large family house of this size and proportions, with substantial frontage and depth, to become available for sale on a freehold basis.”

The Grade II-listed Georgian townhouse boasts 8,520 sq ft across six storeys, with an additional 1,520 sq ft in the Dunstable Mews property.

It features two, separate, lower-ground-floor patio gardens and a ground-floor, 16-seat formal dining room overlooking Upper Wimpole Street.

Originally built in 1787-89, the building was purchased by George Wilson in 1806, and served as consulting rooms for his son Horace.

However, Becky suggested the building could now have a very different use.

“Alternatively, it could be remodelled to provide a luxurious entertaining property, with the lower ground floor transformed into a leisure and fitness suite.”
